How NFL Moneyline Odds Actually Work
A moneyline is expressed as a positive or negative number. A negative number — say -165 — tells you how much you need to wager to collect $100 in profit. A positive number — say +140 — tells you how much profit a $100 wager returns. The favorite carries the minus sign; the underdog carries the plus. That gap between the two
numbers is the sportsbook's margin, sometimes called the vig. On the NBA Basketball Odds Board and MLB Baseball Odds Board you'll see the same format, so once you read an NFL moneyline, every other sport clicks into place quickly. Lines shift as injury news, weather reports and betting volume move the market, so the number you see Monday morning won't always match
what's posted Sunday at kickoff.
